When do you need to work lead safe when painting your home?

In general, regulations require that if you’re disturbing 10 sq. ft.  on the exterior or 6 sq. ft. on the interior of a home built before 1978 then you need to be certified under the Renovate Repair and Painting Rule through the EPA. Not all homes built before 1978 contain lead based paint. To verify, you can hire a company to perform a lead test or do-it-yourself kits are available at your local home center if you want to tackle it yourself. Without testing you should proceed with the work assuming there is lead in the paint.

You can find more information on the RRP rules at: https://www.epa.gov/lead/lead-renovation-repair-and-painting-program
